Scan project effort estimator
How many scan positions, days on site and modeling hours does your scan project need? Describe the object, have your documents analyzed as a ZIP, check the quantity schedule – and request a specific quote with the summary.

What is the calculator for?
Why you need it
Before an existing plant is revamped, the as-built data must be right. How much effort a laser scan survey takes depends on area, congestion and level of detail – this determines budget, schedule and often also the time window of a plant shutdown.
Which tasks it solves
- How many days will we be on site – does it fit into the shutdown?
- Roughly how many hours do registration and modeling take?
- How large will the point cloud be – what does IT need?

Scans per day depend on the scan time: an optimized scan with color takes 2 to 6 min depending on the level. Add 2 min per position to relocate. Higher levels take considerably longer. The parameters (m² per scan position, minutes per level, data per scan) are guide values and can be changed under “Adjust parameters”. Checklists for scan targets and point cloud delivery are available under Work aids.
What drives the number
Congestion
Densely piped plants need many scan positions with 40% overlap – every object from at least two sides.
Level of detail and scan time
Small-bore lines and valves need shorter distances and a longer scan time per scan (with color: optimized 2–6 min, very high 6.5–14 min) – more scans and more data.
Accessibility
Platforms, ladders, hazardous areas and ongoing operation extend the time on site – clarify these during the site walk.
Frequently asked questions
How are the modeling times derived?
From the quantity schedule: pipe length (up to DN 50 and above), valves, instruments, vessels, equipment, pumps, steel structures (columns and beams derived from platform area and grid size, stairs, ladders, railings) and cable trays – each multiplied by hours per unit. With EdgeWise, the piping share drops; checking and handover are added. The table in the calculator shows every item; all effort values are guide values and can be changed.
What happens to my documents?
The analysis (with a customer account) runs in your browser – nothing is uploaded. It detects drawing types (floor plan, section, P&ID, isometric), scales, photos and tags of lines, valves and equipment. To request a quote, send the summary and the documents by e-mail to our sales team.
Why a range instead of a single number?
When estimated from drawings, the number of scans is often far too low. Only the site walk reveals congestion, platforms and passageways.
Do you also scan residential buildings?
Yes – commissioned through your architecture or design office: surveys of existing buildings, floor plans, sections and elevations.
Non-binding effort estimate based on experience – not a quote. We determine the actual effort after reviewing the documents or on site.
