Identification generator

Pipe marking by fluid with colors, tape quantity and print template – plus checking KKS codes and explaining them in plain text, and assembling AKS and RDS-PP codes. A simulation for teaching and training based on freely available Wikipedia information – not for identifying a plant in operation.

Basis & sources

What the tool calculates with, which standards and data it relies on and where its limits are. As of September 2026.

Calculation method
  1. DIN 2403Group by fluid → base color, lettering, additional color, tape length
  2. KKSCheck structure, explain code letters in plain text using the Wikipedia excerpt
  3. AKS / RDS-PPAssemble structure and prefixes
Standards & codes

Reference: the assistant follows Autodesk's file structure and the connection types of these standards. Standard texts and standard tables are not included.

Data & origin
DIN 2403 groups and colorsWikipedia article "DIN 2403" (CC BY-SA 4.0) – screen colors are approximations of the RAL shades; example fluids: our own compilation
KKS code lettersExcerpt from the Wikipedia article "Kraftwerk-Kennzeichensystem" (CC BY-SA 4.0) – main groups, subgroups listed there, equipment unit and component keys
Not usedNo standard texts and no VGB key list – the generator explains but does not replace the guideline
Assumptions & limits
  • Explanatory tool: the current DIN 2403 and the key part of VGB-S-811-01 are binding.
  • KKS keys not listed are only checked formally.

What is the calculator for?

Why you need it

Pipelines must be marked according to the fluid they carry – for safety, the fire service and maintenance. Plant identification codes (KKS, AKS, RDS-PP) link the P&ID, 3D model, documentation and maintenance: every part can be found everywhere under the same number.

Which tasks it solves

  • Is the KKS code formally correct, and which system is behind it?
  • How is the AKS code composed according to the owner's guideline?
  • What color is the marking for compressed air, steam or natural gas?
  • How much marking tape is needed for the plant?

When in the design process

  1. Basics / preliminary designDefine the identification system before the first tags are assigned
  2. Basic engineeringAssign tags in the P&ID and 3D model according to the system
  3. Detail engineering–
  4. Installation / commissioningOrder and apply pipe marking tapes and signs
  5. Operation / modification of existing plantsHandover to maintenance, retrofitted identification in existing plants

For teaching – not for operation

The generator simulates identification – for learning, practicing and explaining in university studies, vocational training and courses. It is based on freely available information (Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0), not on the standard texts. For identifying a plant in operation, the current DIN 2403 or the operator's identification guideline applies.

Extension for your company: on request, we adapt the generator to your standard or company standard – you provide the standard, and the adapted version runs in the protected customer area. Enquiries: vertrieb@seitz-ingenieure.de

Frequently asked questions

Where do the colors come from?

From the group classification of DIN 2403 (water green, steam red, air gray, oxygen blue, gases yellow, acids orange, alkalis violet, liquids brown). Colors and groups come from the Wikipedia article "DIN 2403" (CC BY-SA 4.0) – check against the current standard before ordering.

Where do the KKS plain texts come from?

From the Wikipedia article "Kraftwerk-Kennzeichensystem" (CC BY-SA 4.0): main groups, some subgroups as well as equipment unit and component code letters. The complete key list is contained in the guideline VGB-S-811-01 – we neither use nor publish it.

Can I print the tapes directly?

The print view shows each ring at full size – as a template and for samples. For use on the plant, use durable films in RAL colors.

Simulation for teaching – not for identification in operation. Groups, colors and code letters based on freely available information (including Wikipedia "DIN 2403", CC BY-SA 4.0), generalized. The applicable standards and your owner's guideline are decisive.
