Plant 3D Configuration & Data Management
For CAD administrators: set up Plant 3D projects centrally, define classes and properties, build numbering according to plant identification systems (AKZ/KKS) and link the data between P&ID and 3D – so every project starts according to your company standard.
Who is the training for?
Target audience
- CAD administrators and key users in plant engineering
- Project leads who define a company standard for Plant 3D
- Designers who maintain project templates
After the training, you can …
- Set up projects and network paths properly
- Configure classes, fields and numbering according to AKZ/KKS
- Link P&ID and 3D and manage revisions, reports and lists
Contents
- Installation and network configuration
- Classes and field definitions
- Numbering AKZ/KKS
- Revisions, reports, lists
- Link P&ID ↔ 3D

Keep learning
Here's where to go after the training.
Plant 3D Piping Spec Workshop
Build piping specs and catalogs to your own requirements – with real catalog data.
Plant 3D Database Management
Manage project databases and migrate from SQLite to SQL Server Express.
Learning path
Four qualification levels, five steps from user to project lead.
Questions from our training courses
These are the questions participants ask most often – with the answers from the training.
Should each user use their own catalog folder?
No. By default, the installation creates a local content folder with several content packs (e.g. a shared catalog for nozzles, supports, instruments and placeholders, as well as standards-based catalogs). In production use, a shared network folder is recommended so that all users work with the same catalogs and piping specs and nobody has to maintain their own set separately. After changing the content path, restart the Spec Editor, as it reads the configuration at startup.
Can I build an additional tag, e.g. a customer tag, from several fields?
Yes, with a calculated field. Under Properties, click "Add", choose type "Calculated" and in the Expression Editor combine the desired properties with the "Concatenate" operator; put separators in quotation marks in between (e.g. "-"). Optionally set it to read-only. The value is generated automatically without you having to update. Created at the "Engineering Items" level, it is available for all objects in lists – this way you keep your own tag and the customer's tag separate.
All my pipes end up on layer 0. How do I set up automatic layer assignment?
In the Project Manager, open Project Setup > Plant 3D DWG Settings > Layer and Color Settings. Use "New" to create a setting, e.g. assign layer by line number (tag) and color by layer, and set it as current. For supports, "Same layer as pipe" is recommended. Note: the change can be applied to all open drawings – test it on a copy first. Every line must have a line number for this to work.
How do I prevent empty properties (e.g. Supplier) from appearing as dots on the symbol?
In Project Setup, under P&ID DWG Settings > P&ID Class Definitions > Engineering Items, enter a space as the default value for the property in question (e.g. Supplier). This applies to all newly drawn objects; the annotation then remains invisible. For existing objects, add the space in the corresponding column via the Data Manager. A space also has the advantage that you can filter for it specifically in bills of materials.
How do I create a component for the piping spec from a solid (e.g. STEP or a manufacturer model)?
1. Insert the solid at 0,0,0 and align it with the X axis. 2. Use BLOCK to create a block with base point 0,0,0 and save the drawing. 3. Convert it into a Plant part with the function for block-based parts and set the center point and direction at each connection; finish the function with "Exit", not with Enter. 4. In the Spec Editor, create a component with custom graphics and assign the appropriate block to each nominal size. For many sizes, parametric scripts are more efficient.
How do I specify a uniform file name format with a selection list for new drawings?
In Project Setup under General Settings > File Name Format, you define the components, e.g. project number – drawing type – drawing number. You can enter a fixed project number directly as a separator (adjust it when copying the project!). For a selection list, first create a new list under P&ID Class Definitions > Pipe Line Group on a list field via "Edit List", without assigning it to the field. Then select this list as the field type in the file name format. If it does not appear immediately, close Project Setup and reopen it.
Frequently asked questions
How does this training differ from the Plant 3D fundamentals course?
The fundamentals course shows how to work in a project. This course covers the setup behind it: project structure, classes, tag formats, numbering and the link to P&ID.
Are there ready-made project templates as a starting point?
Yes. ASEING PlantConfig Pro offers templates for KKS, AKS, RDS-PP and ISO 10628 – in the training you see how such templates are structured.
Can I bring examples from our company standard?
Of course. As company training, we work directly with your plant identification system and your title blocks.
Where does the training take place?
Preferably live online from your own workstation – efficient, without travel and resource-friendly. For every date you can also attend in our training room in Frankfurt am Main; for company training, we come to you.
How long is a training day?
A training day consists of four blocks of two 45-minute teaching units each. The days are not stretched – a four-day training course lasts four days.
Is there a discount if several colleagues attend?
Yes. A tiered discount applies from two participants; the training calendar calculates the price immediately when you book.
How late can I register?
Registration closes eight days before the start. The course runs with a minimum of three participants – you will receive confirmation in good time.
Can you run the training just for our team?
Yes – as company training with your project data and company standards, live online, in Frankfurt or at your site. We agree on the date and content with you.
