Questions from our training courses

These are the questions participants ask most often – with the answers from the training.

How do I back up my customized interface so it doesn't get lost?

First set up palettes, toolbars, the menu bar and options. Then, via the gear icon in the status bar or the workspace selector in the Quick Access Toolbar, choose "Save Current As". It is advisable to keep the name of the original workspace and append your own abbreviation, e.g. "P&ID ISO AB". This preserves the original, and you can see which workspace yours is based on. Save again after, for example, switching the palette group – otherwise changes are lost the next time you open Customize User Interface.

After copying, objects show a question mark instead of a number. Why – and how do I assign new tags?

A tag may occur only once in the project; a copy would get the same number, so the program sets a "?". Right-click the object at its edge and choose "Assign Tag"; the button next to the number assigns the next available number. If you have already placed the annotation, deactivate "Place annotation after assigning tag" – otherwise a second annotation is created, which you then select and delete. Preferably copy with the COPY command instead of Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V and use a crossing window (from right to left) so that connected lines are copied as well.

How do I record revision states and restore older drawing versions?

A proven approach: plot every issue as a PDF, with the revision index in the file name and title block. In addition, back up the entire project at each revision point – with the project closed, copy the project folder or store it as a ZIP with the date in the name. You can retrieve individual drawings from it via "Copy Drawings to Project". If, on the other hand, you only swap DWG files in the project folder, the drawing and the project database no longer match.

Why should the project name not contain spaces or special characters?

When you create a project, the project name is also used as the name of the project folder. Spaces, special characters and very long paths can later cause problems with access, copying or backups. A proven approach is a project number with a short name and underscores, e.g. "2026_001_Pumpstation". Enter the full project description in the Description field of the wizard – spaces are no problem there and the text can be changed at any time. Also, do not create projects in synchronized cloud folders, as creating them there can take a very long time.

How can I tell whether a line is correctly connected to equipment?

A plus sign at the end of a line means: not connected. When connected correctly, a nozzle is placed and annotated automatically. For a grid-accurate connection, use Shift + right-click > "Apparent Intersection" and click the line and the equipment outline. In P&ID, preferably use the object snaps Nearest, Node and, if needed, Perpendicular – Endpoint and Midpoint often lead to connections off the grid.

The Project Wizard is not displayed correctly or crashes – what could be the cause?

A common cause is Windows display scaling above 100% (e.g. 125%). Right-click the desktop > Display settings, set scaling to 100%, sign out of Windows and back in, and restart AutoCAD P&ID or Plant 3D. The wizard is then usually displayed in full.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need AutoCAD skills?

Yes, we assume basic AutoCAD 2D skills. For this, we offer the one-day course AutoCAD Fundamentals on the day before the P&ID training.

Is AutoCAD P&ID included in Plant 3D?

Yes, AutoCAD P&ID is part of AutoCAD Plant 3D. The training is suitable for both licenses.

Are our symbols and numbering systems taken into account?

In the public training, we work with a standard project. Custom symbols and plant identification are covered in the "AutoCAD P&ID Setup" training – or in company training.

Where does the training take place?

Preferably live online from your own workstation – efficient, without travel and resource-friendly. For every date you can also attend in our training room in Frankfurt am Main; for company training, we come to you.

How long is a training day?

A training day consists of four blocks of two 45-minute teaching units each. The days are not stretched – a four-day training course lasts four days.

Is there a discount if several colleagues attend?

Yes. A tiered discount applies from two participants; the training calendar calculates the price immediately when you book.

How late can I register?

Registration closes eight days before the start. The course runs with a minimum of three participants – you will receive confirmation in good time.

Can you run the training just for our team?

Yes – as company training with your project data and company standards, live online, in Frankfurt or at your site. We agree on the date and content with you.
