Questions from our training courses
These are the questions participants ask most often – with the answers from the training.
What is the difference between saving and publishing an NWD file?
Saving writes the file, which stays open in Navisworks. Publishing creates an NWD file that is not opened afterwards but is ready for sharing; you can also set additional options. For sharing with external parties, publishing is recommended; simple saving is more for internal use.
Why do clashes that were already resolved reappear after re-running the test?
When you use the Compact command, clashes with the status Resolved, Approved or Reviewed are removed from the list. The next time the test is updated, Navisworks detects these locations as clashes again. Therefore, set deliberately accepted clashes to Approved and leave them in the list instead of compacting. After changes to the model, updating shows which clashes have been resolved and which are new.
The clash test returns hundreds of irrelevant hits – how do I reduce them?
Use the test rules: for example, ignore items on the same layer, in the same group/block, in the same file or with coincident snap points. Also create search sets and test trade against trade in a targeted way; remove insulation or supports from the group as needed. Very small penetrations in the millimeter range can be sorted and set to Approved all at once. A good folder structure and consistent layer naming make this much easier.
How do I create and distribute a clash detection report?
In Clash Detective, switch to the Report tab, select the statuses you want (e.g. only New and Active) and the format. The HTML report or HTML (Tabular) is the most readable; XML is better suited for further processing. With the Viewpoints format, the clashes are saved as viewpoints including comments and can be shared with an NWD file. You can assign clashes to a person with a comment using Assign.
How do I combine, for example, all insulation into one group for clash detection?
Open Find Items and define a condition, e.g. Item > Name contains the term you want. Find All selects the objects. Then save the search as a search set in the Sets window. Search sets are updated automatically when the model changes and are available in Clash Detective as Selection A or B. For a better overview, you can also assign transparency to the objects.
Navisworks becomes very slow with the point cloud – how can I make it run more smoothly?
The point cloud should only be referenced in the NWD file; if it is embedded, the file grows enormously. Load the complete RCP project only once so that the views of the scan positions are adopted, and then remove it again. Instead, load the regions exported in ReCap (RCS files): one larger RCS file is displayed much more efficiently than many individual scans. Hide parts you don't need via right-click > Hide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Plant 3D skills?
Experience with a 3D program helps. The training teaches you Navisworks itself from the ground up – including with models from Revit or other programs.
Which Navisworks version is taught?
Navisworks Manage; the viewer functions also apply to Navisworks Simulate and Freedom.
Where does the training take place?
Preferably live online from your own workstation – efficient, without travel and resource-friendly. For every date you can also attend in our training room in Frankfurt am Main; for company training, we come to you.
How long is a training day?
A training day consists of four blocks of two 45-minute teaching units each. The days are not stretched – a four-day training course lasts four days.
Is there a discount if several colleagues attend?
Yes. A tiered discount applies from two participants; the training calendar calculates the price immediately when you book.
How late can I register?
Registration closes eight days before the start. The course runs with a minimum of three participants – you will receive confirmation in good time.
Can you run the training just for our team?
Yes – as company training with your project data and company standards, live online, in Frankfurt or at your site. We agree on the date and content with you.
