Plant 3D Scripting & AutoLISP
Two days of automation for AutoCAD Plant 3D: Day 1 covers Python script components (CustomScripts) for catalogs – explained using the scripts from our technical books. Day 2 covers AutoLISP – reading, adapting and writing your own routines, using our own tools for ortho, project cleanup and export as examples.
Who is the training for?
Target audience
- CAD administrators who maintain catalogs and tools
- Buyers of our book bundles (Python Scripting, Screwed Fittings, Cable Trays)
- Users who want to automate recurring tasks in Plant 3D
After the training, you can …
- Read, adapt, register and test Python scripts for catalog components
- Adapt script catalogs from the technical books to your own product series
- Write AutoLISP routines with selection sets and dialogs and distribute them within the team
Contents
Day 1 · Python scripting
- Structure of a CustomScript: @activate, parameters, geometry from primitives
- Registration (PLANTREGISTERCUSTOMSCRIPTS), preview images, variants.map
- Scripts from the technical books: threaded fittings, cable trays, supports
- Script components in the catalog – parameters per size, Catalog Checker and catalog adapter
Day 2 · AutoLISP
- Basics: lists, calling commands, system variables, error handling
- Selection sets and object data, dialogs with DCL
- Our routines explained: ortho annotation, project cleanup, layout export
- Loading and distribution: acaddoc.lsp, menu (CUIX), tool palettes
Prerequisite
Plant 3D fundamentals; piping spec workshop recommended. Recommended prerequisite course: Plant 3D Piping Spec Workshop.
Process
Four 90-minute blocks per training day with exercises at your own CAD workstation – live online or in Frankfurt. The days are not stretched.
Events
This course is in preparation. Register your interest without obligation – we will contact you with the first dates and the price. It is already available on request as in-house training for your team.
Keep learning
Here's where to go after the training.
Plant 3D Piping Spec Workshop
Build piping specs and catalogs to your own requirements – with real catalog data.
Plant 3D Database Management
Manage project databases and migrate from SQLite to SQL Server Express.
Learning path
Four qualification levels, five steps from user to project lead.
Questions from our training courses
These are the questions participants ask most often – with the answers from the training.
What is the difference between the TRIM and BREAK commands?
With TRIM, you simply click the parts to be removed up to the next cutting edge. With BREAK, you select an object and specify a defined first and second point; the section in between is removed, even without a cutting edge. For circles and arcs, this works counterclockwise. "Break at Point" splits an object at a point without removing anything.
How do I load a LISP routine (.lsp) in AutoCAD so that it is available every time it starts?
Save the .lsp file in a fixed folder. Run the APPLOAD command (Load Application), select the file and click "Load" – it is then available for the current session. To load it permanently, add it in the same dialog via "Startup Suite > Contents…". Routines that modify coordinates (e.g. setting Z values to 0) usually work in the current UCS – set the UCS to "World" beforehand and check the drawing before saving.
How do I transfer additional toolbars from a CUIX file I was sent?
Enter _CUI on the command line or choose Tools > Customize > Interface. At the top, switch to the Transfer tab. On the right, open the CUIX file using the "Open customization file" icon. Under Toolbars, select the entries you want (Ctrl for multiple) and drag and drop them onto the Toolbars node on the left. Confirm with Apply and OK. The toolbars appear on the main screen and can be docked to the edge. Then save your workspace.
How do I back up my customized interface so it doesn't get lost?
First set up palettes, toolbars, the menu bar and options. Then, via the gear icon in the status bar or the workspace selector in the Quick Access Toolbar, choose "Save Current As". It is advisable to keep the name of the original workspace and append your own abbreviation, e.g. "P&ID ISO AB". This preserves the original, and you can see which workspace yours is based on. Save again after, for example, switching the palette group – otherwise changes are lost the next time you open Customize User Interface.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need programming skills?
No. Basic knowledge of Plant 3D is enough; we start with the basics of Python and AutoLISP and work on finished examples.
Which scripts are covered?
The scripts from our technical books "Python Scripting", "Screwed Fittings" and "Cable Trays", plus our own AutoLISP routines from practice. The books are available as a bundle with catalogs.
When will the first dates take place?
This course is in preparation. Register your interest without obligation – you will receive the dates as soon as they are set. It is already available on request as in-house training.
Where does the training take place?
Preferably live online from your own workstation – efficient, without travel and resource-friendly. For every date you can also attend in our training room in Frankfurt am Main; for company training, we come to you.
How long is a training day?
A training day consists of four blocks of two 45-minute teaching units each. The days are not stretched – a four-day training course lasts four days.
Is there a discount if several colleagues attend?
Yes. A tiered discount applies from two participants; the training calendar calculates the price immediately when you book.
How late can I register?
Registration closes eight days before the start. The course runs with a minimum of three participants – you will receive confirmation in good time.
Can you run the training just for our team?
Yes – as company training with your project data and company standards, live online, in Frankfurt or at your site. We agree on the date and content with you.
