Piping
The basic standard for metallic industrial piping is the DIN EN 13480 series (2024-12 edition). Piping specs are structured according to DIN 21057, the successor to PAS 1057. The current overview of standards is in Chapter 14.

Support spans
The support span is the distance between two pipe supports. For straight pipe runs, it is determined from the distributed load q: dead weight of the pipe, contents (operating fluid or water during the pressure test), insulation, cladding and additional loads such as heat tracing or snow. Point loads such as valves are added.
| Criterion | Verification | Typical limit |
|---|---|---|
| Deflection | f = kf · q · L⁴ / (E · I) | Project specification, e.g. 5 mm or L/500; drainage and appearance |
| Stress | σ = p · D / (4 · e) + M / Z ≤ f (DIN EN 13480-3, Section 12.3.2, loads from pressure and weight) | allowable stress at operating temperature |
| Slope | Slope of the deflection curve at the support ≤ slope of the line | prevents water pockets in sloped lines |
| Structural | Grid dimension of the steel structure, pipe racks | z. B. 6 m, 12 m |
Changes of direction, branches, flanges and heavy valves shorten the support span. Thermal expansion, support loads and stability of the substructure are verified in the pipe stress analysis.

Component data for building catalogs
The following data is required for each component in the CAD catalog. The long description is output in the bill of materials and order text and must therefore be suitable for ordering.
| Component | Required data | Additional | Optional |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pipe | Nominal size range from–to, pressure rating, wall thickness, long description, dimensions according to standard | Fixed pipe length yes/no | Material, weight per meter |
| Elbow | Bend radius (2D, 3D, 5D), angle | Material | |
| Reducer | DN 1 / DN 2, concentric or eccentric | Material | |
| Tee | equal or reduced branch | Material | |
| Weld neck flange | Flange type, facing | Material | |
| Lap joint flange | Flange type, facing, flare/collar | Material | |
| Valve | Type, end type/facing, face-to-face length, actuator | Material |
Valves
Valves shut off, control or protect the flow. Depending on the design, the closing element is a valve disc, a flap, a gate or a plug or ball.
Shut-off and control valves
- Globe valve, control valve, needle valve
- Butterfly valve, gate valve
- Ball valve, plug valve
- Swing check valve, check valve, backflow preventer
- Pressure reducer, steam trap, vent
- Mixing valve, balancing valve
- Safety valve
Other inline components
- Filter, strainer, dirt trap
- Compensator
- Orifice plate
- Sight glass
- Spade, spectacle blind
Actuators
Handwheel or lever, electric, pneumatic or hydraulic actuator. Check valves close automatically by the fluid flow.
Every valve has an application range defined by pressure, temperature, nominal size, tightness requirement, fluid and flow direction. Safety valves limit the pressure in boilers, vessels and reactors. Consider installation position and operability as early as the 3D design stage.
